So then I went ahead and installed both again, and put the patch on the original 6-channel version. So, I wiped everything clean, taking note of that specific file (pwrdvdx.dll). However, when I installed it, the audio went kaput again with the special 4-channel version of PowerDVD. However, Cyberlink put out a patch that you could apply that let you use it with ATI cards. Initially, both versions of PowerDVD didn't support it.

Then I came across the problem with hardware dvd acceleration (from my ATI card). So, after installing both versions (in different folders so they wouldn't interfere with each other) and playing around with the registry, I narrowed down the problem to a specific dll file that was a different size in each installation. I didn't think about this b/c I previously had a copy of the 6-channel version of PowerDVD. What I didn't think of before was that this version was specifically written for my card. Then I thought that was very odd b/c my card came with a copy of PowerDVD. That would explain why I couldn't get the surrounds to work properly.

Remember how I said that it was most likely a software problem? Well, I did some poking around at the product webpages of both PowerDVD and WinDVD and found out that neither of them support my card for more than 2 channels.

This was bothering me so I had to figure out what was going wrong. I was under the impression that both PowerDVD and WinDVD were able to downmix Dolby 5.1 into 4.1, but it seems that it can't. Again, with Dolby Headphone, the placements are right, but it's still a simulation.Ĭoncerning Dolby Headphone, what I mean by simulation is that each speaker puts out some sound even when they shouldn't in a true 5.1 or 4.1 system. When the LFE is announced, it comes from the left channel and my sub does put out the low bass tone (unlike PowerDVD). Then there is no sound at all for the surround announcements. Again, LF, center, and RF come out the fronts like they are supposed to, but they again are mirrored to the back. This is nice and all, but I'd really like discrete channels, and not a simulation. This works in the sense that the channel announcements come from the right place spatially, but it is just a simulation (since Dolby Headphone simulates 5.1 with just two channels). This occurs when I use every possible setting combination in PowerDVD except Dolby Headphone. The LFE announcement comes from the left channel like the test said it would, but no bass from my sub comes out. There is no sound at all for the surround announcements. The weird thing is, those three channels get mirrored to the back two speakers. When I use PowerDVD, LF comes from LF, center comes from both LF and RF (phantom), and RF comes from RF. It cycles through all the channels including the LFE, one at a time. The file that LarryJoe sent me was the 5.1 channel identification chapter of AVIA. is there any other way i could get it from you? vob of your tests, i'd really appreciate it. i posted another thread here but have not gotten any response yet. to top it all off, the digital optical out doesn't seem to work right b/c there's a constant low level noise in the signal (the red light's always on). also, when set to 4 speakers in powerdvd, it sound like there's dialog coming out the back.Īs you can tell, i'm very frustrated with it all b/c i got new speakers and a new sound card and it all doesn't seem to work right. however, when watching a dvd, dialog is considerably lower. even when i enable 6 channel analog in powerdvd, the tests don't work. I've tried every possible setting in both windvd and powerdvd and i've come up with squat. In windvd, the left, center, and right test signals work fine, except nothing comes out the back when it does the surround signals. the rest after that don't output anything. then the center signal goes to the right speaker.

then it switches to left plus phantom center. In powerdvd, the left test signal comes from the left front speaker. both are supposed to be able to downmix 5.1 to 4.1 (they should phantom the center channel b/t the front left and right). i have a thx test on my T2 ultimate edition dvd, but powerdvd and windvd don't like it much.

i also am using the newest drivers from the hercules website. i put that in my computer and all is nice. however, my mx300 sound card doesn't work properly under win2k, so i just got a new hercules fortissimo 2 today.
